Crash Course on Storytelling: Powerful Storytelling of Europe
VIBE Crash Course on Storytelling: Powerful Storytelling of Europe invites young creators to unlock the power of storytelling with just a smartphone. In four lively modules, you will discover the secrets behind captivating stories, explore how images speak volumes, and experiment with editing and sound to stir emotions. By the end, you will craft your own 30–60-second video story, transforming your ideas into a finished masterpiece.
Why do some videos stay with us while others are forgotten in seconds? This crash course shows how to turn everyday moments into audiovisual stories that people connect with. It was developed within the Erasmus+ project Young Voices Inspiring Active Citizenship (VIBE).
The course has four modules. Each includes practical examples from film, documentaries and social media, a hands-on assignment, and a short quiz:
- Module 1 – Story Foundations: the four building blocks of every story (character, goal, obstacle, change), why our brains respond to stories, the three-act structure, and how conflict and stakes keep viewers watching.
- Module 2 – Seeing Like a Storyteller: framing, camera angles, composition, camera movement, visual symbolism and storyboarding, all practised with a phone camera.
- Module 3 – Time and Emotion: editing as the "invisible storyteller", the Kuleshov effect, pacing, continuity and contrast, and how sound, music and silence change the feel of a scene. You will work in free tools like CapCut, iMovie or DaVinci Resolve.
- Module 4 – Creating Your Own Audiovisual Story: you bring everything together to plan, film, edit and share an original 30–60 second video, then gather feedback from an audience.
You don't need experience or professional equipment. A glossary of filmmaking terms is included to help you. By the end, you will be able to spot what makes a strong story, plan your shots, and edit with purpose so you can use your own voice to inspire others and get involved in your community.
